FAQ

Conductors

Do I need to have previous conducting experience to apply?

No experience is required to apply. However, those with previous experience (either instrumental or choral) will take priority over those with no prior experience.

Who can apply? Is there an application fee?

We encourage high school students, college students, and community members to apply for featured conductor positions. There is currently no fee associated with the application.

As a conductor, do I have to sing in the choir?

Yes, all featured conductors are required to sing in the choir and are expected to learn their peers' selections.

I applied/participated last year. Can I apply/participate again?

Applicants and participants from previous years can apply again; however, priority will be given to new applicants and those who were not selected from previous years.

Do I have to participate in both sessions?

No. On the application, you will select the session(s) you are able to/want to participate in. You do not have to participate in both!

Is this a paid position?

No, the Emerging Conductors Workshop does not pay featured conductors or choir members. Our workshop's purpose is to allow students and community members to gain experience in choral conducting, and is entirely volunteer based.

I wasn't selected as a conductor this year. What can I do?

Unfortunately, we can only offer a certain number of conducting positions per session. That being said, we strongly recommend everyone interested in the clinic be a part of our choir. There are still many valuable lessons to be learned on the performer's side of our clinic that may be beneficial to your conducting. We also encourage you to apply again in the future!

Choir

Is there an audition required to become a choir member?

No! There is no audition to sing with us. Just fill out the sign up form on our Apply page. Plus, it's free!

Who can become a choir member?

High school students, college students, and community members are all encouraged to participate in our choir. There are no requirements, but know that our rehearsal process is only 2 days long and there will not be a focus on learning notes and rhythms within that timeframe. Materials will be sent in advance to allow choir members to rehearse independently if they wish.

Is my spot guaranteed?

Currently, we do not have a limited amount of spots for choir members. However, we reserve the right to cap our enrollment if we receive more interest forms than we have resources for. If this is the case, you will be contacted at the email you provided on the sign up sheet.

I have a conflict, can I participate?

Choir members are able to participate with a conflict, but we strongly discourage you from doing so if you have a major conflict (such as missing an entire day). Our rehearsal process is only two days long, and out of respect for both our conductors and clinicians, we would like rehearsals to reflect clinic/showcase day as closely as possible. If you have a conflict during this year’s dates and are curious about how you can fit in with us, please reach out. If you know that you have a major conflict, please consider joining us next year!
